SS – Personal Responsibilities on Summer Staff

What is Summer Staff Really Like?

Summer Staff team members are the living representatives of Jesus Christ. How you act, respond and work can affect how others see Christ.

Summer Staff team members have the ability to make camp really special, and have a lot of fun in doing it. It is about creating a safe environment for young people to see Jesus clearly. There isn’t a lot of scope for creativity in ensuring peoples safety, but there is in your actions as you go about doing it. There is plenty of scope for creativity in how you present and plan your job at camp. We need to work together to do special things for the campers. The biggest part of Summer Staff is the work; we need to do all the work in a way that stands out as exceptional.

Another aspect of Summer Staff is community. The Summer Staff lives and work together as a team of people desiring to serve God. The Summer Stuff team is just that “The Summer Staff,” not people from around the country, or this church or that, but “The Summer Staff.” We serve the camp and each other in Christian love. As a team we will study God’s Word and pray for each other, for the camp, for individuals on camp, for a group of campers and many other things. We need to come with an attitude of wanting to learn and grow in our relationship to our Lord.

During camp you may be given a group of campers to pray for. Early on camp you may be asked take something special to them for supper and at the end of camp you will go back and share your story of faith with them. This can be a very scary experience but it is also a very good and stretching one.

Personal Responsibilities on Summer Staff

Work responsibilities

  • Work to the best of your abilities at everything you are assigned to.
  • Life is not always easy nor is it fair. You work for the glory of God and not the praise of man. Col. 3:17.
  • You are part of a team, play the role you are meant to play. You are not a group leader, you are not a person on holiday, and you are not a camper.
  • Always do what you are asked to do. Look for things that need doing that you are not asked to do. Take the initiative.

Personal responsibilities

  • Give support to summer staff bosses, you are responsible to them. Recognise their authority. Their word is law. Do what they ask when they ask. 1 Peter 5:5‑7, 2:13.
  • Take the initiative in personal concern for the other summer staff members. Rom. 12:1‑13, 1Cor. 12:12‑26.
  • Get to know the other summer staff members, especially those from other areas
  • Be examples to the campers. Col. 1:10‑12.

Spiritual responsibilities

  • Seek to develop a constant awareness of being God’s servant and practice its implications.
  • Maintain and develop a daily Christian walk
  • Contribute to the fellowship of the summer staff.
  • Pray for all aspects of camp continuously.
